Odor and
Corrosion Control
V&A led upgrading the Manatee County Utilities (MCU) existing wastewater collection system odor control program to dramatically reduce corrosive hydrogen sulfide (H2S) conditions. Key steps included:
- Assessing the long-term odor control program across three Water Reclamation Facility (WRF) collection systems basins involving 700+ lift stations. Historical sampling and monitoring data review included chemical feed rates, hydrogen sulfide related data, and vapor phase treatment performance.
- Developed an approach to reduce corrosive conditions by strategically integrating the wastewater’s pH elevation into the existing odor control program of each Master Lift Station (MLS) sub-basin.
- Managed the implementation and optimization efforts over a two-year period. V&A provided technical oversight, directed service vendor activities, evaluated performance data, directed treatment adjustments, and issued routine reports of H2S reduction realized vs. target goals.
- H2S was reduced 50-95% to achieve MLS corrosion control level goals by optimizing three key factors: pH elevation, dissolved sulfide reduction, and turbulence minimization.
- MCU’s Collection Systems & WRFs are benefiting from dramatically less corrosive and hazardous conditions with limited operating cost change.
