Perris Valley Regional Water Reclamation Facility

V&A Consulting Engineers, Inc. (V&A) was retained by the Eastern Municipal Water District (District) to evaluate odor conditions at the Perris Valley Regional Water Reclamation Facility (PVRWRF). The PVRWRF treats approximately 15.5 million gallons (MG) of wastewater daily from the Perris Valley area. The facility currently uses odor control measures, including chemical addition in the collection system and a biofilter that treats odors from multiple unit processes. Due to anticipated residential and commercial development adjacent to the facility, the District retained V&A to evaluate the effectiveness of current odor control measures and provide recommendations to optimize or supplement those efforts to prevent negative impacts on the new development.

V&A performed a field investigation utilizing the following methods: continuous monitoring for hydrogen sulfide gas (H2S) to analyze fluctuations in hydrogen sulfide levels in the odor ventilation system; continuous monitoring for differential pressure (DP) to analyze pressure fluctuations in conjunction with hydrogen sulfide levels; liquid sample analysis in order to measure the dissolved sulfide content, pH, oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), and temperature; odor sample analysis in order to measure H2S, reduced sulfur compounds (mercaptan), ammonia (NH3), and other nitrogen-based odors (amines; -NH2); air flow measurements to determine the air velocity and volumetric flow rate of the odor control ventilation system.
