V&A Consulting Engineers (V&A) completed a condition assessment and developed detailed design of the Water Pollution Control Facility (WCPF) Biological Nutrient Removal (BNR) rehabilitation in Las Vegas, NV. Owned and operated by the City of Las Vegas (City), the WCPF currently has a capacity of 91 million gallons per day. V&A was retained by GC Wallace to perform a condition assessment of the gravity thickeners at Plants 3/4 and perform detailed design for rehabilitation of the thickeners, conversion from parallel to series operation of the thickeners at Plants 3/4 and Plants 5/6, replacement of eight 20-inch plug valves with pneumatic actuators in the BNR return activated sludge (RAS) system, and replacement of miscellaneous pumps, piping, and pipe supports at the BNR facility.
The condition assessment performed on the gravity thickeners comprised of reviewing as-built drawings of two 50-foot diameter circular reinforced concrete thickener tanks and 6-inch ductile iron (DI) sludge/scum piping, confined space entries, field assessment/testing of concrete, coatings, and metallic components, and CCTV of the sludge scum piping. Assessment and test methods included visual assessment with photo documentation, concrete sounding, concrete penetration, surface pH, surface penetrating radar, concrete core sampling, concrete core testing for chemicals and strength, and ultrasonic thickness testing on metallic components. Detailed design was completed in 2019.
